Photography of large objects is always a challenging task, even for the well experienced photographers. The most challenging aspect being the lighting. This is especially true in the case of carpets that range from small 3 feet x 2 feet to 14 feet x 12 feet.

There are two manners in which photography of carpets can be undertaken:

  1. Over The Top: This approach works perfectly fine for all carpets up to 7 feet x 5 feet. Either a camera jib is employed on which the camera is mounted or the photographer using a wide angle lens leans and extends him arms over the carpet and clicks the photographs. In most of the cases, the photographer climbs on a stool or step ladder, to gain some additional height, so the entire carpet is captured.
  2. Perspective View: This method is employed for very large carpets and rugs. The carpets are laid out on the floor and the photographer climbs on a stool / step ladder and shoots.

In either of the cases, we will need to post process the carpet photographs, remove the background and replace the flooring with white colour.

There are various types of carpets, depending on how are they are manufactured. Either the carpets are machine made or hand woven. The hand woven and hand knotted carpets are much more expensive as compared to the machine made. The handmade carpets are generally made of pure wool or blend of silk /wool or pure silk, with cotton as the base material.
